India ranked in top 10 for climate efforts despite decline
India remains in the top 10 of the Climate Change Performance Index due to low per-capita emissions and rapid renewable energy deployment.
India has maintained its position in the top 10 of the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2025, despite slipping two spots from the previous year. This achievement comes as a result of the country’s relatively low per-capita emissions and its rapid progress in deploying renewable energy, according to a report released. The CCPI, which assesses 63 countries along with the European Union, tracks efforts to combat climate change, focusing on emissions, the use of renewable energy, and climate policy.
The 63 nations included in the index are responsible for 90% of global emissions. However, the report highlighted that, despite India’s strong performance, significant shifts in its climate policies are unlikely. The country’s growth-focused approach to climate action is expected to persist, driven by increasing energy demand from both industry and a growing population.
The CCPI report left the top three spots unfilled, as no country demonstrated sufficient performance across all categories to earn an overall “very high” rating.
