Calderys, a global provider for industries operating in high-temperature conditions, has reinforced its commitment to sustainable industrial development through its flagship facility in Odisha: the Calderys Plant in East & South India, also known as CAPES. The site, a major single-location greenfield project, is dedicated to manufacturing refractories and steel casting fluxes for the Indian market.

The CAPES facility has been designed with environmental responsibility as a core consideration. Sustainability efforts at the site extend beyond regulatory requirements, with a focus on energy, water, emissions, and waste reduction.

As part of its renewable energy strategy, the plant aims to source 20% of its energy needs from solar power within five years. It is also designed for zero effluent discharge. No wastewater is released outside the premises due to on-site effluent and sewage treatment systems. Recycled water is used in landscaping and auxiliary processes. The site will also include 95 groundwater recharge pits to support local aquifers.

A green belt initiative is underway, targeting 33% green cover within the site. Of the planned 2,000 trees, 800 have already been planted. This initiative supports biodiversity and contributes to carbon offsetting and local microclimate regulation.

Air quality management has also been prioritised. The plant is equipped with a dust and emission control system intended to keep emissions significantly below conventional levels. High-efficiency filtration technology is in use to reduce particulate output.

In line with circular economy principles, CAPES is integrating scrap and recycled materials into its production process. This approach is aimed at reducing waste and improving resource use.

Commenting on the initiative, Ish Mohan Garg, Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific region, said, “ Our environmental measures are a commitment not just to the planet, but also to the communities and generations we serve, and they support India’s national decarbonisation goals.”

Through these initiatives, CAPES seeks to align with national environmental targets and contribute to broader global sustainability efforts.
