Budget 2025: Environment Ministry gets 9% hike in funding

The funding will enhance efforts in ecosystem conservation, wildlife protection, and expanding forest cover. 

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has been allocated Rs 3,412.82 crore in the 2025-26 Union Budget, marking a 9% rise from Rs 3,125.96 crore in 2024-25. The increased funding will support efforts in ecosystem conservation, wildlife protection, and expanding forest cover.

The National Mission for a Green India, which focuses on forest expansion, preservation, and wildfire prevention, will receive Rs 220 crore in 2025-26, up from Rs 160 crore last year. Funding for natural resource and ecosystem conservation has also grown, from Rs 30 crore to Rs 50 crore.

Biodiversity conservation funding has seen a significant boost, nearly tripling from Rs 3.5 crore to Rs 10 crore. Additionally, Rs 35 crore has been allocated for aquatic ecosystem conservation, an increase from Rs 23.5 crore in 2024-25.

The budgets for Project Tiger and Project Elephant, initiatives aimed at protecting these iconic species and their habitats, have been raised from Rs 245 crore to Rs 290 crore.
