India’s ambitious rail electrification programme is approaching completion, marking a major milestone in the country’s transition towards cleaner transport and net-zero carbon emissions. Indian Railways has already electrified more than 99 per cent of its broad-gauge network, with the remaining sections expected to be completed shortly.

The scale and speed of electrification achieved in recent years have been unprecedented. Between 2019 and 2025, Indian Railways electrified over 33,000 route kilometres, averaging more than 15 route kilometres per day. This expansion alone is comparable to the entire railway network of Germany, underscoring the scale of India’s clean rail infrastructure push.

Currently, 99.2 per cent of India’s broad-gauge network across 25 states and Union Territories is electrified, placing the country among global leaders in railway electrification. The achievement is particularly significant given that Indian Railways operates one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world.

The transition from diesel to electric traction has delivered multiple benefits, including reduced fuel consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, decreased operating costs and improved train performance. Electrification has also enhanced the reliability and speed of passenger and freight services, contributing to better mobility outcomes.

While several advanced economies continue to rely on diesel traction due to high costs or legacy infrastructure constraints, India’s consistent planning and execution have enabled rapid progress. Once the final sections are electrified, Indian Railways will operate one of the world’s largest fully electrified railway networks.

The near-completion of the electrification drive supports Indian Railways’ long-term objective of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter, while offering cleaner, faster and more efficient rail services to millions of passengers every day.
