In this episode of Sustainability Karma, Dia Mirza, actor and UN Goodwill Ambassador, discusses the urgency of translating climate commitments into actions and emphasizes the need for leaders to address environmental issues with immediate, tangible steps rather than set distant future goals.

Reflecting on the progress of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of influencers in driving climate awareness and action, amongst other issues, Ms Mirza notes that since only 15% of SDGs are on track, engaging with diverse groups, including civil society and young people, provides a deepened sense of purpose.

Concerned about the gap between climate action declarations and follow up actions, she highlights the urgency required from governments, businesses, and financial institutions.  Expressing the need for stronger commitments and actions to address the environmental crisis, she emphasises the expectation for leaders to present concrete actions rather than distant commitments. She underscores the urgency of the climate crisis, urging a shift in the way society operates to address environmental challenges, such as plastic pollution.

Ms Mirza stresses the role of influencers in translating awareness into action. It includes making science accessible to people and engaging with young individuals to inspire change within their immediate environments. She echoes the sentiment that everyone can contribute to positive change, emphasising the need to focus on one’s sphere of influence to create a significant impact.

She also talks about the profitability of green businesses and discusses the importance of aligning investments with personal values. While acknowledging the challenges faced by green businesses, she advocates for more support systems and incentives to help them thrive.

Looking ahead, Ms Mirza outlines her plans to mobilise the film industry and storytelling towards adopting the SDGs and implementing sustainable practices. This includes making the entertainment industry a committed space for environmental action.

She acknowledges that India’s efforts are well-known abroad Saying India is making strides in areas like renewables but needs to step up in various other domains. She also emphasises the country’s crucial role in achieving SDGs due to its population size, skill sets, and innovative capabilities.
