Delhi launches 25 new EV charging stations to support green mobility

Delhi has launched 25 new low-cost EV charging stations, bringing the total to 78. The expansion supports the city’s green mobility goals.

The Delhi government has taken another significant step in its push for sustainable mobility, with the launch of 25 new low-cost electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the city. The new charging points, managed by Delhi Transco Limited, bring the total number of government-operated EV charging stations to 78, strengthening the city’s position as a leader in green mobility.

At an event marking the launch, Atishi, Minister for Power and Energy, highlighted Delhi’s commitment to building a robust EV infrastructure. “Delhi now boasts more than 2,400 EV charging points, offering the lowest rates in the country. This is why 12 percent of all new vehicles registered in Delhi are electric,” Atishi said. She also pointed out that the city is home to the world’s second-largest fleet of electric buses, reinforcing the city’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

The new charging stations feature multiple charging points at each location, designed to ensure accessibility and affordability for EV users throughout the city. The initiative, part of Delhi’s broader EV strategy, aligns with the government’s goal of making the city a hub for sustainable, green transportation.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also praised the launch of the new charging stations, calling them “the power banks of a modern Delhi.” He stressed the importance of political will and visionary leadership in achieving such milestones. “Despite challenges, we have achieved 12 percent EV adoption among new vehicle registrations, laying the foundation for a cleaner, healthier future,” Sisodia said. He also emphasised the role of educated and committed leadership in overcoming issues like pollution, adding, “Educated leaders build infrastructure; uneducated leaders foster crime. With leaders like Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi, Delhi has proven that strong political will can overcome the toughest challenges, including pollution.”

Atishi further elaborated on the success of Delhi’s EV policy, which includes subsidies, tax exemptions, and the development of affordable charging infrastructure. “Under the guidance of Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi has shown that effective governance can turn vision into reality. The day is not far when Delhi’s EV model will be recognised worldwide, just like its education model,” she said.
