India’s solar, wind power drive growth in renewable energy sector

India’s renewable energy capacity grew by 24.2 GW in 2024, reaching 203.18 GW, driven by strong gains in solar and wind power. Hydro and nuclear energy contributions also boosted the clean energy transition.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has released encouraging data showing significant growth in India’s renewable energy sector from October 2023 to October 2024. This progress highlights the nation’s commitment to achieving its clean energy targets in line with the ‘Panchamrit’ goals outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India’s total renewable energy installed capacity surged by 24.2 GW, or 13.5%, over the past year, reaching a total of 203.18 GW in October 2024, up from 178.98 GW in October 2023. This rise is in line with India’s ambitious goals for its renewable energy sector. When including nuclear energy, the total non-fossil fuel capacity grew to 211.36 GW in 2024, compared to 186.46 GW in 2023, further solidifying India’s shift toward cleaner energy sources.

Solar and Wind Power Growth

The solar power sector saw remarkable growth, with an increase of 20.1 GW (27.9%) from October 2023 to October 2024, bringing the total solar capacity to 92.12 GW, up from 72.02 GW. The combined total capacity, including both operational and upcoming projects, now stands at an impressive 250.57 GW, up from 166.49 GW in 2023.

Wind power also experienced steady growth, with installed capacity rising by 7.8%, from 44.29 GW in October 2023 to 47.72 GW in October 2024. Additionally, the total capacity of wind projects in the pipeline has reached 72.35 GW, demonstrating continued momentum in India’s wind energy development.

Capacity Additions

From April to October 2024, India added 12.6 GW of renewable energy capacity. In October alone, 1.72 GW was installed, marking an accelerated shift toward renewable energy sources. The number of renewable energy projects under implementation and tendered also saw impressive growth. As of October 2024, 143.94 GW of projects were under implementation, and 89.69 GW were tendered, up from 99.08 GW and 55.13 GW, respectively, in October 2023. These figures underscore India’s consistent progress in meeting its clean energy targets.

Contributions from Hydro and Nuclear Energy

In addition to solar and wind energy, large hydro projects contributed 46.93 GW to India’s renewable energy portfolio by October 2024. Nuclear energy also played a key role, with a contribution of 8.18 GW, further diversifying the country’s renewable energy mix. These contributions highlight the resilience and diversity of India’s green energy transition, reinforcing the government’s comprehensive strategy for a sustainable energy future.

Through these impressive strides, India is making significant progress toward realising its clean energy goals, strengthening its position as a global leader in renewable energy development.
