The Government of India has announced an invitation for proposals to establish Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for Research and Development in Green Hydrogen. This initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and aims to foster advanced research and innovation across the Green Hydrogen value chain. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) issued this call for proposals on November 4, 2024, as part of the Mission’s R&D scheme, with the relevant documentation accessible to potential applicants.

The main objective of these CoEs is to accelerate India’s transition to a low-carbon economy and enhance its energy independence through the promotion of sustainable Green Hydrogen technologies. These CoEs will focus on advancing research in areas such as Green Hydrogen production, storage, and utilisation. In doing so, they will serve as hubs for innovative research, skill development, and knowledge sharing in Green Hydrogen technologies. The CoEs will also foster collaboration among key stakeholders, including industry, academia, and government entities, to drive technological breakthroughs and improvements in process efficiency. By aggregating expertise and resources, the CoEs aim to strengthen the Green Hydrogen ecosystem across India.

The MNRE had previously released guidelines on March 15, 2024, outlining the implementation framework for the R&D Scheme under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The guidelines encourage the formation of partnerships among public and private entities, including research institutions and universities, to submit proposals for this call. The government has allocated Rs. 100 crores towards establishing these Centres of Excellence, which are a strategic element of the broader Green Hydrogen Mission.

Launched on January 4, 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission has an overall budget of Rs. 19,744 crores, intended to span until the fiscal year 2029-30. The mission supports India’s commitment to becoming Aatma Nirbhar, or self-reliant, in clean energy and aligns with the nation’s ambition to play a leading role in global clean energy initiatives. By advancing Green Hydrogen, the mission aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions, decrease dependence on fossil fuel imports, and position India as a leader in Green Hydrogen technology and market development.

This initiative by the Government of India reflects its dedication to creating a sustainable future and leading the transition to a global clean energy economy through the development and adoption of Green Hydrogen solutions.
