Vedanta’s iron ore mining arm, Sesa Goa, has achieved energy savings of nearly 8 million units during FY25 and the current fiscal to date through technology upgrades, smarter systems and in-house innovations, the company said on Thursday.

Energy savings support clean energy transition

The reported energy savings are equivalent to the annual power needs of more than 6,000 average Indian households, highlighting Sesa Goa’s contribution to sustainable mining and India’s broader clean energy agenda.

The company stated that energy efficiency measures are being systematically integrated across operations to reduce environmental impact while improving operational performance.

Waste heat recovery strengthens circular economy

A key contributor to the savings is Sesa Goa’s 65 MW waste heat recovery power plant, which converts heat generated from blast furnaces and coke oven flue gas into electricity. This initiative significantly reduces reliance on grid power and strengthens circular economy practices within the company’s mining and processing facilities.

Long-term sustainability embedded in operations

The company indicated that it is accelerating energy conservation and clean energy initiatives, delivering measurable gains during FY25 and extending into FY26. With a mining legacy spanning over seven decades in Goa and a strong operational footprint in Karnataka, sustainability is being embedded into core business processes.

Solar and electric mobility adoption grows

Sesa Goa’s renewable energy portfolio is expanding, with a 100 KWP solar plant now operational at its value-added business unit. In addition, the company has begun transitioning from diesel-powered wheel loaders to electric vehicle wheel loaders across mining and value-added operations.

This shift has reduced diesel consumption by approximately 50,000 litres per unit annually, supporting both cost efficiency and emissions reduction.

Alignment with ESG and Net-Zero goals

The company’s leadership highlighted that initiatives such as electric mobility, solar power adoption, artificial intelligence, digitisation and in-house innovation demonstrate Sesa Goa’s commitment to ESG excellence and Vedanta Group’s net-zero emissions target by 2050.

These measures are aimed at building an efficient, future-ready and environmentally responsible mining ecosystem.
