SM Investments Corporation has launched a free MSME sustainability learning programme in partnership with the Global Reporting Initiative. The initiative aims to strengthen sustainability reporting and responsible business practices across Philippine supply chains.

E-learning course supports MSME capability building

The programme introduces an inaugural online bridge course on sustainability reporting for micro, small and medium enterprises. It was unveiled during a sustainability training workshop for publicly listed companies held at SMX Aura in Taguig.

The workshop focused on helping companies understand alignment between GRI Standards and the emerging disclosure framework of the International Sustainability Standards Board.

Sustainability reporting beyond compliance

SM Investments has indicated that the programme goes beyond report preparation. The focus is on understanding data, building practical skills and creating long-term business value.

The company sees MSMEs as key partners in advancing sustainability. Strengthening their capabilities is viewed as essential for resilient and responsible supply chains.

MSMEs play a central role in the economy

MSMEs account for about 99.5 per cent of operating businesses in the Philippines. The SM Group works with more than 100,000 MSMEs across its value chain.

To support this sector, SM and GRI co-developed the free bridge course. The goal is to equip MSME owners, suppliers and partners with foundational sustainability knowledge.

Free access and practical guidance

SM Investments is sponsoring the self-paced online course. GRI will support dissemination through its platform partners and networks. The course will also be shared across SM’s MSME ecosystem.

Participants will learn key sustainability and climate-related concepts. They will also understand the benefits of sustainability reporting and how to begin applying these practices in daily operations.

Long-term partnership strengthens sustainability

SM Investments and GRI have worked together since 2018. The partnership has contributed to wider adoption of sustainability reporting in the Philippines.

The collaboration continues to focus on building shared value. The programme reflects a broader effort to embed sustainability across industries and support inclusive economic growth.
