KP Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of the Republic of Botswana to collaborate on the development of large-scale renewable energy generation, energy storage and transmission infrastructure. The agreement supports Botswana’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030 while marking a significant step in KP Group’s international expansion strategy.
Framework for large-scale clean energy development
The MoU was signed between Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy and KP Group, which includes KPI Green Energy Limited, KP Energy Limited and KP Green Engineering Limited. It establishes a strategic framework for the planning, development and execution of renewable energy projects and associated transmission infrastructure across Botswana.
The partnership aims to enhance the country’s energy security, diversify its energy mix and position Botswana as a regional exporter of clean power within Southern Africa.
$4 billion investment to add nearly 5 GW capacity
Under the agreement, KP Group and the Botswana government will jointly develop renewable energy and infrastructure projects with an estimated capital investment of approximately $4 billion (around Rs. 36,000 crore). These projects are expected to increase Botswana’s renewable energy capacity to nearly 5 GW.
The collaboration will focus on large-scale solar and wind power projects, supported by energy storage systems to ensure grid stability and reliable power supply.
Strengthening transmission and regional power connectivity
In addition to generation assets, the partnership includes the upgrading and construction of high-voltage transmission lines within Botswana. Enhanced interconnections with neighbouring countries are also planned to facilitate cross-border power transmission and merging Botswana into regional electricity markets.
These efforts are expected to support regional energy integration and unlock opportunities for clean power exports.
Skills development and local capacity building
As part of the MoU, KP Group will provide 30 scholarships every year to Botswana citizens. These scholarships will support education and skill development in renewable energy, engineering, sustainability and related fields.
The initiative is designed to strengthen local capacity, encourage knowledge transfer and empower young professionals to contribute to Botswana’s clean energy transition.
KP group to lead project execution
KP Group will take the lead on technical and commercial development activities, including feasibility studies, project design, financing, construction, commissioning and long-term operation and maintenance of renewable energy and energy storage assets.
The partnership reflects Botswana’s intent to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while leveraging international expertise and investment to accelerate clean energy deployment.
Strategic global expansion for KP group
For KP Group, the MoU represents a key milestone in its global growth journey beyond India. The company currently has a renewable energy portfolio of around 6 GW and is targeting 10 GW by 2030.
The Group is also expanding into green hydrogen and ammonia, battery energy storage systems, and offshore and floating solar solutions. These initiatives are supported by its advanced fabrication and galvanising facility in Matar, Gujarat, home to Asia’s largest galvanising kettle.
