The Government has acknowledged intensifying climate change impacts across India, citing rising temperatures, shifting monsoon patterns, extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and growing risks from soil degradation and groundwater depletion.
Strengthening climate science and policy response
According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, long-term assessments show increasing frequency and intensity of cyclones, droughts and extreme rainfall. These findings are shaping India’s climate policy framework, linking scientific evidence with preparedness and resilience planning.
Advanced early warning and disaster systems
India has significantly upgraded its early warning capabilities through high-resolution forecasting models, dense observation networks, GIS-based decision support systems and real-time satellite and radar data. These systems support impact-based forecasts for cyclones, floods, droughts and heatwaves, helping reduce risks to lives and infrastructure.
Flood and landslide forecasting expansion
The Central Water Commission now issues short-range flood forecasts and disseminates real-time updates through the FloodWatch India mobile application. Meanwhile, the Geological Survey of India has operationalised landslide forecasting across multiple high-risk districts, strengthening disaster risk reduction.
Digital tools and AI-led forecasting
The India Meteorological Department has adopted AI and machine learning, supercomputing systems and sector-specific risk-based warnings down to district and sub-city levels. Mobile applications and digital alert platforms are improving last-mile communication.
Mission Mausam and national collaboration
Mission Mausam aims to make India weather-ready and climate-smart through advanced Earth system modelling and high-performance computing. National missions and global collaborations are enhancing understanding of climate systems, supporting resilient infrastructure, renewable energy planning and circular economy-aligned adaptation strategies.
Together, these measures reflect a coordinated national effort to address climate change through science-led policy, technology-driven resilience and long-term sustainability planning.
