India and Jordan have reinforced their strategic partnership with a strong focus on renewable energy and sustainable development during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Amman on 15–16 December 2025.

The visit, the first full-fledged bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Jordan in 37 years, coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. It formed the first leg of the Prime Minister’s three-nation tour of Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman.

During high-level discussions, both sides agreed to deepen cooperation across renewable energy, water resource management, digital solutions, trade, defence, innovation and people-to-people ties. Five key agreements were signed, including a memorandum of understanding on technical cooperation in new and renewable energy and another on water resources management and development.

Renewable energy emerged as a central pillar of the discussions, reflecting shared priorities around energy transition, climate action and sustainable growth. The two countries also agreed to collaborate on digital public infrastructure, including sharing population-scale digital solutions to support digital transformation.

India and Jordan set an ambitious target to raise bilateral trade to US$5 billion over the next five years. India is currently Jordan’s third largest trading partner, with strong linkages in fertilisers, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and services. Jordan remains a major supplier of phosphates and potash fertilisers critical to India’s agricultural sector.

Economic cooperation is supported by long-standing joint ventures in fertilisers, growing Indian investments in Jordan’s manufacturing zones, and expanding trade promotion initiatives. Both sides also highlighted opportunities in critical minerals, infrastructure and clean technologies.

The visit further strengthened collaboration in science and technology, building on the India–Jordan Centre of Excellence in Information Technology, which focuses on advanced digital skills, cyber security and emerging technologies. Education and capacity building remain important pillars, with Jordanian students continuing to access Indian higher education and training programmes.

People-to-people ties were also emphasised, supported by cultural exchanges, tourism links and a vibrant Indian community in Jordan. The twinning agreement between Petra and Ellora and the renewal of the cultural exchange programme for 2025–2029 underline the growing cultural partnership.

The outcomes of the visit reaffirm Jordan’s role as a key partner in India’s West Asia engagement. With a shared emphasis on renewable energy, sustainability and economic growth, the strengthened partnership is expected to deliver long-term benefits for both countries and contribute to regional stability.
