In the heart of Rajasthan, the tiny village of Aandhi is undergoing a remarkable transformation into a zero-waste community, harnessing the power of innovative green technology. Located just 43 kilometers from Jaipur, this village is turning its waste challenges into opportunities for sustainability.

At the forefront of this initiative is the organic waste bio-methanation plant situated in a local government school. Here, villagers are learning to convert 100 kg of organic waste daily—such as food scraps and agricultural residues—into biogas through anaerobic digestion. This plant is not just about waste reduction; it features a 5 KW solar energy system that provides clean energy for cooking and electricity, significantly lowering the village’s reliance on traditional fuels and contributing to cleaner air.

Meanwhile, the vermifiltration technology at the community health center is a game changer for wastewater management. Utilising earthworms to filter and treat greywater, this system has a capacity of 10 KLD and makes previously unusable water suitable for irrigation. The integration of solar energy ensures that this eco-friendly process is both effective and sustainable.

In addition, the constructed wetlands at the village pond mimic natural ecosystems to treat wastewater, boasting a capacity of 20 KLD. This initiative not only manages wastewater but also enhances local biodiversity, supporting the health of both flora and fauna in the area.

Aandhi’s journey toward sustainability is further supported by a resource recovery center, which aids in the collection and recycling of waste. The introduction of vermicomposting units empowers villagers with knowledge and tools to manage waste effectively.

Inaugurated by Dr. Anita Gupta and Dr. G.V. Raghunath Reddy, these initiatives showcase Aandhi’s commitment to environmental stewardship. By embracing green technology, the village is not just transforming itself but also setting a precedent for other rural communities across India, paving the way for a cleaner and greener future.
