Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) has operationalised an in-house Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre (ISWMC) to strengthen scientific waste handling and circular economy practices across its rapidly expanding airport ecosystem.
Managing waste at source
The airport currently generates about 24–26 tonnes of solid waste every day from passenger terminals, airside activities, retail zones and support facilities. By processing waste within the campus, the ISWMC reduces dependence on external vendors, lowers transportation-related emissions and improves control over compliance and environmental performance.
Major reduction in landfill disposal
With the facility now functional, BLR Airport expects to send only 2–3 per cent of its total waste to landfills. The remaining 97–98 per cent will be recycled or recovered through a combination of in-house processing systems and authorised downstream partners.
Technology-driven treatment capacity
The centre has been developed with a total waste processing capacity of 77 tonnes per day. Up to 50 tonnes per day of organic waste will be treated through bio-methanation, generating compressed biogas for use in airport kitchens, along with liquid manure and compost for landscaping and green areas.
Responsible handling of inorganic waste
About 27 tonnes per day of inorganic waste will be handled through mechanised segregation lines. Recyclable materials will be channelled to authorised recyclers, while non-recyclable but recoverable fractions will be sent for co-processing in the cement industry.
Leadership perspective on responsible growth
Hari Marar, Managing Director and CEO of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), said the project reflects the airport’s commitment to managing its environmental footprint responsibly while creating long-term value for communities and the environment.
Building on sustainability credentials
The ISWMC adds to BLR Airport’s sustainability achievements, including being the first airport in Asia to achieve Level 5 accreditation under ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation programme and attaining net-zero emissions well ahead of its 2030 target.
Driving behaviour change across the ecosystem
The initiative is supported by BLR Airport’s Behavioural Change – Sustainable Transformation Programme, which encourages passengers, partners and employees to adopt responsible waste disposal and segregation practices, enhancing the long-term effectiveness of the new facility.
