Equinix partners with CleanMax to power data centers with 33 MW renewable energy
Equinix partners with CleanMax to develop a 33 MW renewable energy plant in Maharashtra, India, to power its Mumbai data centers with solar and wind energy, supporting sustainability and digital infrastructure growth.
Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the world’s digital infrastructure company®, has signed its first-ever power purchase agreement (PPA) in India with CleanMax, a leading renewable energy provider. The partnership will see the development of a 33 MW Captive Power Plant in Maharashtra, which will provide renewable energy to power Equinix’s growing portfolio of data centers in Mumbai. This collaboration also aligns with India’s national renewable energy targets and Equinix’s ongoing sustainability goals.
The Captive Power Plant will feature a combination of 26.4 MWp of solar capacity and 6.6 MW of wind power. It is expected to come online in phases throughout 2025. Once fully operational, the project will supply renewable energy to Equinix’s International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers in Mumbai, ensuring the company’s Indian operations are powered entirely by renewable sources. The move is part of Equinix’s strategy to meet the rising demand for digital infrastructure, driven in part by the growing adoption of AI in the region.
Manoj Paul, Managing Director of Equinix India, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “This agreement strengthens our commitment to sustainability while enabling us to provide our customers in India with 100% renewable energy coverage for their deployments at Equinix.” He also highlighted India’s global leadership in renewable energy, noting that the country ranks fourth in total renewable power capacity additions.
Raouf Abdel, Executive Vice President of Global Operations at Equinix, added, “Digital infrastructure is the backbone of the economy, and as the demand for data centers grows, securing a reliable and sustainable energy source is critical. This investment not only underscores our long-term commitment to sustainability but also reinforces our position as an industry leader. We’re excited to contribute to the growth of the Indian market while driving positive change and fostering a sustainable future.”
This PPA is part of Equinix’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio globally. The company has already signed 23 PPAs across various regions, including the US, Australia, France, Finland, India, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Singapore. These agreements will collectively contribute over 3 million megawatt hours (MWh) of renewable energy annually once fully operational. In addition to renewable energy procurement, Equinix continues to invest in energy efficiency, having reduced its annual energy consumption by 66,862 MWh in 2023 alone, thanks to a $77.5 million investment in energy efficiency projects.
CleanMax has emerged as a key player in Asia’s renewable energy sector, with over 2 GW of operating renewable assets serving more than 400 clients. The company has built a strong reputation for enabling businesses to meet their sustainability goals through carbon mitigation and renewable energy solutions.
The collaboration between Equinix and CleanMax is expected to serve as a model for how corporates can support growth while driving sustainability. Looking ahead, CleanMax plans to explore additional sustainability solutions for Equinix’s AI-ready data centers across India and globally.
